Waterloo Road: Just trying to feel something

sonya ianto jones waterloo road(Series 10, ep.18) The appearance of Ianto Jones off of Torchwood at the end of this episode has finally made sense of ten series’ worth of barmy madness. Waterloo Road is the centre of an alien invasion! Most of the staff and pupils are humanoid(ish) visitors from other worlds! There was another clue in this episode when New Marco told his science class that extra-terrestrial life was a “mathematical certainty.” Thank heavens that Torchwood are finally on the case (though I seem to recall that Ianto Jones is technically dead…).

dale waterloo roadMore of him next week, anyway, and back to the present episode. Cycling Dale has gone properly off the rails this week. He reckoned he was unable to feel anything since he had to give up cycling, but that’s probably due to malnutrition and a fondness for jazz cigarettes. Lisa Brown offered him a feel of her, but that wasn’t enough to bring a spring back into his step (or any other part of him, according to Lisa), so he ended up on the roof. This was a scene reminiscent of the time when Denzil Kelly decided extreme pop drinking and mild electrocution weren’t enough of a “buzz,” and went walking on the parapet of a bridge for kicks. Finn Sharkey was on hand that time to save Denz, and this time Lenny Brown talked Dale down and by the end of the episode even shared a flapjack with him.

abdul waterloo roadThere were touching scenes when Abdul’s birth mother arrived from Pakistan. She was absolutely lovely and handled their reunion with incredible grace and charm. Abdul was torn for a while between going to Pakistan to meet the siblings he never knew he had, and staying in Scotland with Mubbs off of Holby (who was looking rather buff this week). He eventually chose Mubbs, but I thought this was a really well acted and moving story.

Bonnie was still being bullied, and Yaughan had a theory that she was bullying herself for attention. If only Dale had thought of that. It turns out it’s probably Leo doing the bullying, which my clever friend Grace worked out weeks ago.

It was a busy week for New Marco. When not teaching science he was going for drinks (separately) with Christine and Lorna. Christine was quite happy to enjoy a bit of “mid life crisis” action afterwards, but Lorna was being a bit more cautious. Just as well because (a) Marco probably hadn’t quite recovered from Christine at that point and (b) Ianto Jones off of Torchwood was watching – and the preview of next week’s show informed us he’s Lorna’s husband.

Nothing to worry, Ianto is here, and alive! Seriously, love his new rol as Rob, Gareth is a great actor, and Waterloo a fantastic show.
