Holby City: And then there was one Valentine

(Series 13, Ep.26) Stunningly Beautiful Dr Penny Valentine is no more! Crushed beneath a crashed train while rescuing a patient, her fabulous skin and gorgeous hair will be seen on Holby no more.

It sounds like one of those Holby/Casualty crossover episodes, all action sequences and falling masonry, doesn’t it? But it was all the more shocking because the action didn’t leave the hospital, so there wasn’t really any hint that such a huge tragedy would occur. In fact the first sign that all wasn’t well was when Michael Spence and Goth Dr Frieda, who’d gone to the scene of the accident with Penny, arrived back alone, while Oliver was leaving a message on his sister’s voicemail, trying to make amends with her and telling her that “life’s too short.” Oh, the dramatic irony of that little phrase.

There was loads going on this episode – power tussles between Dan and Sacha, and Sahira and Jac. But the episode belonged to Young Dr Oliver Valentine (brilliant work from James Anderson), under threat from his sister that if he hadn’t told Hanssen that he wasn’t actually medically qualified by the close of play, she would do it.

Boy Valentine has been a bit rubbish recently, medically speaking. Lots of mistakes, errors of judgement, lack of confidence. Then on what was due to be his last day as a doctor, there’s a massive train crash, Holby is the designated receiving hospital for the casualties, AAU is on the front line, and Oliver is up to his knees and out of his depth treating a woman with a shard of glass sticking out of her abdomen and delusions that her daughter, who died five years ago, is still alive. He almost messed things up, “helpfully” allowing the woman to delay surgery because she didn’t want to use up supplies of blood that her daughter might need (in the confusion, Oliver thought her daughter was being operated on elsewhere by Sacha and Dan). But, when pressures and sats and all those droppable things started dropping, Oliver was the only person who was available to perform life-saving surgery. Coached by the rather magnificent Malick, who yelled instructions at him down the phone while carrying out another bit of surgery in another theatre and then sprinted like a greyhound to AAU, Oliver proved that, when push comes to shove, he’s got the balls and the skills.

A good day for Boy Valentine, then, and his first reaction was to share the news of his triumph with his sister, by ringing her. “I’ve had a bit of a day,” he said, and then remembered she’d spent her shift at the scene of a terrible train crash. “I can only imagine what kind of day you’ve had.” Then he got the news from Michael Spence – Penny was dead.

In the morgue to identify the body, Oliver confessed to Malick about cheating in his exams and swapping his paper for Penny’s. Malick is only a few letters apart from the word “maverick” himself, and mere technicalities don’t bother him. He’d seen Oliver’s best work that day and didn’t want him to waste his talents. “As far as I’m concerned, we never had that conversation,” he said.

I’m glad Oliver will be staying, but I’m sad Penny had to go, and I’m sad that she had to be crushed under a train rather than joining Scott James in Spain for a happy life. But Spain would never have suited her colouring, and the tragic nature of her demise will no doubt inspire Oliver to be a better man, to be worthy of her.

And what a day to be starting a new job as CT consultant. Jac Naylor received a gift – a pair of kick-ass shoes from the glorious Connie Beauchamp, with the message “Fill them.” And filling Connie’s shoes is exactly what Jac proceeded to do, mainly by picking fights with Sahira. Jac doesn’t really do “colleagues,” she does “rivals,” and Sahira, because of her close relationship with Hanssen, is the biggest rival of the lot.

However, by the end of the episode Jac had to concede that Sahira was sometimes right in her more conservative approaches (a lesson also learned by Dan, as he and Sacha disagreed over whether to amputate a teenage girl’s leg). “Maybe you’d better look at your idiosyncratic management style,” Hanssen advised her, before dropping the bomb that Darwin may be about to close. Oh, and Jac also received a punch in the eye from an annoyed relative. Like I said, what a day to be starting a new job.

Next time: Michael. Malick and Sahira all have things to prove.

PS – from Emma Catherwood on Facebook: “Ah finally it’s aired so I can speak! I’ve been dying to tell you all what happens, and reply to your questions. Let me just say working on Holby was amazing, dedicated cast/crew, not only great at their jobs but lovely people, now friends  for those that asked don’t fear it was my choice to depart (haha!) it’s time to mix it up again!  again thankyou!!! Bye bye Penny Valentine xxxxx”

Incredible fact no. 1: Connie not only knows Jac’s shoe size, but can be bothered to remember it after all this time.
Incredible fact no. 2: Jac (or any woman on her feet all day) is comfortable to walk around for the whole episode in three inch heels. I know Connie used to do this, and it beggared belief even then.
Totally credible fact no. 1: Jac gets jabbed in the eye by a patient. Laugh? I nearly died. She had it coming. Pity he didn’t take her whole eye out.

      1. Connie knows everything and remembers everything.
      2. Jac probably used the pretext of having to get into sensible shoes for surgery to stay in sensible shoes for the rest of the day.
      3. Jac in an eye patch? Too scary.

I enjoyed the shoe business, but otherwise, didn’t think much of this episode at all. Didn’t think it was particularly well written & some of the story lines were rather heavy handed. Now shoot me devoted Holby fans, I know I’m only a dabbler after all ;).

I agree!! Emma will be missed, she is amazing! But can’t wait for future work. I loved what you said about you wish she would have gone and joined Scott in Spain, bless her!! The cast were fab last night – James really did look broken at the end of the episode, Holby won’t be the same without Penny!! Emma is the best 🙂

Have you noticed how the pretty, dark haired doe eyed doctors eventually end up dead in Holby ie Diane, Maddy and now Penny.

  5. Jennie

I did think, like inkface, that Penny’s death was pretty crappily done. This was not good writing, and the character (and the actor) deserved better.

I think the whole focus was deliberately on Oliver as he’s the continuing character. Personally I thought the actual writing was fine. The decision to have Penny’s demise take place off-camera maybe didn’t give Emma Catherwood the best send-off as an actress, so that maybe left people feeling a bit short-changed.

So I spent the entire aftermath of this episode going, “but whhyyyyyyy tho?” *sob* I’m already missing Penny’s palepale skin and amazing hair.

James was pretty awesome, gotta say.

sooooo sad penny died 😦 Emma was amazing on holby xxxx james was brill last night x

Far too much drama to cope with in one episode. Very stressed.

Echoing alot of the comments above, Im so sad Penny had to die. It was pretty crappily done, and yes focusing on Olli because he’s the continuing character make sense, but they couldve at least given her a dramatic send off. I had to rewatch to see when her last scene was because, it was so out of the blue I almost thought I’d misheard. I was half expecting when they got to the morgue, for it not to be her, and it all be a mix up. You know? Especially when we hadnt heard anything about Emma Catherwood leaving. Its sadtimes, anyhows.

Olli still confuses me. He flounders and flails and makes bad calls left right and centre, Mary-Claire was doing more diagnosing than he was “Pneumothorax? Dr Valentine??” comes to mind. Before that he’d been trying to ship patients to Darwin for a bloomin’ chest drain! He needed something major to happen (and I think a woman shoving a piece of glass deep into her chest qualifies) for him to “dig deep” and find some hidden inner manning up qualities; but it shouldnt have taken his sister dying for him to want to do the right thing. He only decided to come clean when he realised (or thought, shock and grief fuelling this) that Penny died hating him. Why should it have to go that far for him to man up and tell the truth? However good he becomes at his job, will be marred by the fact hes lied. He’ll never get away from that.

Meanwhile on Darwin, my off the cuff predications about Connie knowing Jac got the job came coincedentally true (YAY!). Loved the subtle confusion on Jac’s face, then the bemusement at there being a gift, and the gentle smile as she read the card, and the head-shaking smirk at seeing it was shoes. I wonder if Connie will every so often mail her accessories … build up her collection. I reackon a pair of drop pearl earrings next. Would look good I reckons. Back to the story! *cough* Uhh, yes so she strutted and demanded coffee without sugar from FLNT (she doesnt do sweetness, shouldve remembered that from the Sahira cupcake debacle) and promptly asserted herself as leader. Which would have worked a whole lot better had that train crash not got in the way of things. She was starting as she was meaning to go on, “not accepting sloppy standards” etc and thats what we know her for. I cant remember when it was but she had some impassioned speech saying “I shouldnt have to apologise for demanding the best from my team” and shes damn right. Even if she snipes a bit and throws her new power around to make herself feel a bit better, shes gonna get the place organised, carry on in Connies foosteps (almost literally, we just need the pencil skirt and flouncy shirts now) and probably do a damn good job. Shes not afraid of being the bad guy.

Liked the dramatic irony of Greg glueing her little wound after the relative punched her, mirroring how she checked his nose a few weeks back. Theres a quiet friendship blossoming there, I think. Greg just kept himself to himslef, did as he was told, made no enemies and took no sides. Gotta respect the guy for that.

I dont know if theyre making Jac and Sahira into too much of a good cop bad cop thing, (or “touchy feely patient loving cop” and “medical facts cop” would maybe be more accurate), but I almost …. almost think Greg had a point at the end there. If Jac and Sahira teamed up, they would make a formidable team. They match each others shortcomings, Sahira just has to learn to respect Jac for who she is and not try and change her. And not run to Hanssen everytime something doesnt go her way. I think those bridges between her and Hanssen are slowly burning … its interesting stuff.

I never noticed but you were right, the dualism between Jac and Sahira, and Dan and Sachas actions this ep. Chrissie getting Sacha a choccy bar was made of cutes, their little banter “Youre in danger of losing weight” makes my heart bloom. I still hold out hope for them getting together. Sacha deserves it, bless his cottons.

Anyway. Great ep, and great review PLA. Thanks for the continuous dedication and love for the show 🙂

Excellent points there as always, Nikki (and thank you for the kind comment at the end!), and I love your idea of Connie keeping Jac supplied with accessories!

Re Oliver, I think he was making so many mistakes early on because it was hanging over him that, one way or the other, by the end of the day he wasn’t going to be a doctor any more, so his mind wasn’t on the task. He did say at one point that he wasn’t a doctor, but I think Marie Claire chivvied him on. When he managed that tricky procedure and Malick was praising him, he thought maybe he wasn’t so rubbish after all. I think if Penny had met him for a drink after work, he’d have tried to persuade her not to say anything to Hanssen. I wonder whether she would have?

I wondered, when Greg was glueing Jac’s wound (we had a perfect view of his lovely nose in that scene) whether there might be a romance between those two at some point? Following in Connie’s footsteps in more ways than one! Though I do miss the banter between Sacha and Jac – I think Sacha really “gets” Jac, and is one of the few people who sees beneath her armour.

Penny gone without a proper – sad face. And equally sad that we didn’t really get to see Frieda emote upon hearing the news as I’d have liked to see how Olga Fedori would have handled that. I guess shipping her off to Scott wouldn’t have created the arc for Ollie that can now unfold.

Please can Mary Claire be promoted to full time cast?! They need new nurses and she continues to provide epic one liners and impressive bitch faces. Unlike a certain other nurse I can think of. My hope for Elizabeth is that she will start to secretly do bad things to Jac (since I perceive Jac to be even more nasty towards her than usual and it could explain her sudden transfer to Darwin) and develop into the next crazy character. Well they have to do something with her!

    • nikki

Yes on the Mary-Claire point! Theres only 3 nurses left now – Mary Claire, Elizabeth, and Chrissie. She NEEDS to become full time cast or we’ll have no nurses left soon!

      *big hearts for Mary-Claire*

Who played the actor who smacked Jac (hope the shoes were unscuffed) and what old sitcom was he in? Help please it’s driving me nuts.

Delurking in my grief for Penny… was hoping Ollie would leave. I personally liked the way we did see anything of her at the train crash, it meant our experience and grief mirrored Ollie’s.

On the Sahira/Hanssen story, Sahira was arguing vehemently with Jac about the recovering alcoholic. Made me wonder if she and Hanssen met in AA – we’ve all but dismissed the idea that they’re married. Could this explain the bond that they clearly have? And didn’t Holby previously have an AA meeting in the basement?

    • darkamberwolf

*didn’t see anything of her at the train crash.

    • pauseliveaction

I can’t imagine Hanssen being an alcoholic, but maybe that’s because my perception of alcoholics has been tainted by too much Jeremy Kyle. It’s an interesting theory, and they’ve given us no other pieces of the Sahira/Hanssen jigsaw for a few weeks.
